It’s never too late to start running

By FRED FAOUR

I am by no means much of a runner. I started doing it as a way to get in shape and have some goals. I played basketball, baseball and football growing up, and ran track at sprint distances, but was never into distance running.

But at age 51, I ran my first half marathon. (OK, jogged it, VERY slowly). I will attempt another sometime next year.

The cool part is if I can do it, anyone can. I was not in good shape when I started, and while I am in very good shape now, I could still lose a few pounds. So no matter what kind of shape you are in, it’s possible.

I started with the C25k app. It was a simple process designed to take you from the couch to a 5k. It worked very well.  From there I graduated to 10ks, and built up to the half.

I’m still slow. There are times when I struggle mightily, even in 5ks. But it gives me a goal and allows me to drink beer without getting hopelessly fat.

If you’ve been thinking about doing something, try the app. Once you are ready, there is no shortage of great races for great causes around the city.

Here is a list of local races. I particularly enjoy the Run Houston series. I missed the first event last year but am on pace to run in all of them this year.

Also, the Houston Wellness Project does great free 5ks each month around the city. Check them out here.

If my old ass can do it, anyone can.

Fred, you are an inspiration to us all. I’ve been listening to you since the Matt Dean days. Everyday you and Aj are my escape from the beltway traffic. You guys are conquering Houston radio. I put everyone I meet onto your show. I started running (walk jogging) 6 months ago. I was also getting fat drinking beer and not exercising. I was inspired by your no bullshit attitude to working out. My weight has stayed the same sense but I’m also weight lifting with lots of protein. I couldn’t feel better and it all started with you.
    Thank you

P.S. you guys are getting half of Houston addicted to gambling lol.

  2. Thanks man. I really appreciate that. It was a nice thing to see your comments after a really awful run this morning in my last prep for a 10k Saturday. And I hope we aren’t getting people addicted — just helping them win a little. I do always say if you aren’t gambling, don’t start. If you do, learn as much as you can.

Hope I see you at a 5k soon man.
