Each week, we will highlight some goings-on around town. For a complete list of events, check out the Houston Press.
Our good friends at Whitmeyer’s are having a Texans watch party tonight. They are open on Thursday and Friday from 3-9 and Saturday from 12-6, with tours each day for $10 and you can sample all the products. You can also buy bottles to take home. Tastings/tours are at 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 2 and 4 p.m. on Saturday. They are just down the street from 11 below Brewery so you can easily double dip.
Friday 9/23 – The Toadies with Rich Robinson Band
Monday 9/26 – Blind Guardian with Grave Digger
Wednesday 9/28 – Devin Townsend Project with Between The Buried and Me
10/6 Emerge with TBD
Keep your calendars clear in November. The Come and Take It show is set for Nov. 17-20.
Meanwhile, Gabe Bravo provides a breakdown of some of the weekly events:
Monday – Comedy open mic at Rudyard’s British Pub
This is one of the best places in Houston to see amateur comedy. Low ceilings, a full bar, and excellent pub food lend to the feeling of an old-school comedy club, and the list of comedians is curated by the hilarious Dusti Rhodes. The show starts at 8 p.m., and ends at around 12
Tuesday – Secret Group Presents: Open Mic Comedy @ Boondocks Bar
This room is a comedian favorite. It’s an intimate room, and the bartenders are stingy with the mixers. There’s a huge patio for smoking/hanging out.The show starts at around 9:45 pm.
Wednesday – Comedy open mic at Darwin’s Pub & Eatery
Darwin’s is an amazing space for comedy, especially now that they’ve built a nice stage. The show will start at 8 p.m. sharp, and end whenever the comics run out. Also, there are fantastic food and drink specials.
Thursday – Secret Group Satellite Annex comedy showcase at Avant Garden
This is Houston’s best showcase by far. Super cheap drinks, cheap and amazing tacos, free Topo Chico, and a pay-what-you-want cover charge make this room an incredible experience for most of your senses. Famous comedians (Sean Patton, Ron Funches, Bobcat Goldthwait, etc…) often drop in to do guest sets on this show when they’re in town because it’s just that good.
Sunday I will be in the old stomping grounds for the Run Houston Run Houston event at the University of Houston. This is a great series of races that take you all over Houston — Sam Houston Race Park, Minute Maid Park, UH-Clear Lake and Sugar Land/Constellation Field — over the course of the year. They have 5 and 10 k races. I will be in the 10k and hoping to suck less than last week. Check out the series and try to hit them all in 2017.
