Drunk Disco reviews local bars, a multi-part series: Griff’s

Editor’s note: Disco Biscuit is a frequent contributor to the site. She is currently embarking on a tour of downtown/Montrose bars and reviewing them. Today she tackles the legendary Griff’s.

On Sunday, I popped on over to Griffs to watch the Texans game and about half way through the afternoon, after I was good and saucy, I thought about how far too often we go into a bar with friends and then a couple days later when we’re telling everyone how great the bar is, they ask why we like it so much and we’re just like, “uhh it’s good?” Take Griffs, for example. I know it’s good because I go there all the time. But is it!? So I decided to take some notes about the place and write this review when I got home. Then I got home and couldn’t read my notes. Damn, I knew this would happen – the first real barrier to our review plan. Also, I fell asleep, barrier 2. I woke up and read the notes, they were serviceable and I’ve provided a comprehensive review below.

I’ll be rating the drinks, food, and overall atmosphere

Drinks: 6.7/10

Ok, so first things first, I don’t think they have a huge selection -. I know they have Firemans 4, but they were out and they had an IPA from Independence on tap. Also, I don’t know what they have in bottles because if I can’t see it in front of my face I’m not even trying to look. I get nervous the second I walk up, so i just order what I can see.

Second things second, they had $8 pitchers of PBR. At the time that seemed like it was a good deal but now that I’m looking back on it that might be a little high for a pitcher of sh-tty beer that my mom drank in college. We promptly ordered this. At some point we switched to Lone Star and I’m not sure why – they’re the same beer to me, sorry they just are.

One of the best parts of Griffs on game day is the jello shots they hand out after every TD (thank god it wasn’t every score or I would probably be dead) and also if the Texans win. These are the most potent jello shots I’ve ever had. They are delicious. Additionally Jack Daniels has a new flavor out that compares to Fireball but “better.” I had to try this. We had 2 shots each.

I’m not sure what the mixed drink situation is here but I’m gonna go ahead and assume it’s your standard fare. I doubt they are jumping at the opportunity to make you a gin and tonic with responsibly sourced apricots – this is a direct shot at every bar that now lines Westheimer.

For those keeping score at home that’s 1 ½ pitchers of beer and 4 shots. I weigh roughly 130 pounds. I needed food.

Food: 10/10

We ordered queso. My notes tell me it was quite good,  and I think messy because when I woke up on the couch at 9 p.m. I had queso all over the front of my shirt. I also had the Griffs burger – I don’t even have to look at my notes, it was delicious. Their food is your standard pub grub – burgers, wings, etc. BUT on Tuesday nights they have the best steak night in the city. I give the food a 10 simply for the steak night.

Overall ambience: 8.3/10

Ok, so the bartenders at Griffs are my favorite kind of bartender. They are no nonsense. They’re not going to just stand there staring at you while you figure out what you want to drink and try to text Becky and let her know where the bar is. If you don’t know what you want they’re moving on. I respect this. I more than respect this, I love this. I think this kind of attitude really sells the dive bar atmosphere that I love so much about Griffs.

Also, everyone is super friendly, almost too friendly (what are they hiding?) Like 90% of the people in this bar are regulars. It’s the epitome of a neighborhood bar and I hope it never changes. The owners are super sweet and it just feels like a big family. It’s kind of like Cheers but instead of “everyone knowing my name” “no one knows my name because I’ve never introduced myself”.

I’m giving Griffs a rating of 8/10 but they get a drunk disco rating of 10/10. Gonna go ahead and add the Disco Biscuit seal of approval to Griffs. They are my favorite bar in the city this week.

This Sunday I’m going to review Grand Prize Bar. The word “hipster” is in the description and the first 2 google reviews so I’m giving them a preliminary 2.4 – prove me wrong GPB!

Great review of a great local bar! I went to college at The University of St. Thomas down the street from Griff’s and was a frequent visitor. Everything in this review is accurate and reminds me of the good old days. If they are still doing trivia night it’s another great reason to give this place a visit.
