News Ticker

Sam Houston Race Park selections for Tuesday, Jan. 31 with additional analysis not found on the free tip sheet

How to use the picks: These are the same picks you can get on the free tip sheet available  at shrp.com and on track. They are not meant to necessarily be in exact order, but more an opinion on likely winners. On some cards I will go more in depth than what we have on the tip sheet, because all we are doing there is basically picking the top four and putting in a brief comment. When that occurs I will give suggested horses to use more than specific plays. That is the case with today’s card. I am assuming you have some knowledge or have listened to Acing Racing 2016.
FIRST
2-5-7-6
ANOTHER GREY had trouble in last; should stretch out just fine
Digging deeper: Really like this 2 horse stretching out and the price should be fair. The 5 will take a lot of action as well. We will take 2 across the board, and exacts 2 with 5-6-7.
SECOND
6-3-2-1
Will take a flyer with WESTERNATOR who could take a step forward.
Digging deeper: The 6 horse has a race over the track in the mud that was not bad, but likely needed that start. Should turn it up a little today and again, a nice price. Likely playing across the board but a 6-all-all tri might work as well.

THIRD

4-2-5-7
BUILT BY BEN should improve here and deserves one more shot
Digging deeper: Loved this horse in his first start here and he just did not fire. Will hit him again today in hopes he turns it around. I also like this 2 horse quite a bit and will likely use the 2 and 4 in pick threes, and perhaps a trifecta wheel with the 2-4 on top of 2-4-5-7 with all.
FOURTH
6-5-3-2
CAJUN MAID is a consistent, hard-knocking sort
Digging deeper: The 4 is not on my picks, but I could see it clunking up for a piece. Will consider a back wheel trifecta with 3-5-6 with 4 with all, 3-5-6 with all with 4.
FIFTH
4-6-8-9
Let’s go for a long shot with TX CONFEDERATE ROSE, whose only turf start was solid
Digging deeper: I like horses like the 4, who had only one turf start and it was a solid second at a big price. Was it a fluke or does the horse like the grass? If it’s the latter, we get a sweet price. If it’s the former we know not to bet her next time. Playing across the board.
SIXTH
5-4-1-2
Very competitive group where any of the top four could take this
Digging deeper: Some nice horses in here and I think this race could go a lot of ways. I do like the 5 best of all, but will use all four in pick threes here.
SEVENTH
3-1-2-4
DEBUTANTE BELLE likes the track and should get a nice trip behind the speed
Digging deeper: These horses are all pretty inconsistent so almost anything can happen. I might punch the all button in pick threes and just play the 3 across the board.
EIGHTH
6-4-3-2
MORE THAN MOST almost always fires on the turf
Digging deeper: And the 6 will take most of the money, but this race could go a lot of ways. I think trifectas are the way to go here, maybe using the 4-6 first and second with the 2-3-5-7 with all.
NINTH
6-3-1-5
Calhoun class plunger ROYALLY DIVINE could win by 10 or miss the board
Digging deeper: These horses are always tricky. A huge drop in class, which might mean they want the horse claimed, and it also might mean they are trying to get it right. I usually play against these horses, and the 3 is a solid key horse if you want to go that way. I will probably play one ticket with the 6 over the 1-3-5 with all in tris, then key the 3 first and second with the 1-5-6 with all. If it runs 6-3 we probably break even. If the 6 runs out, we will get a nice score.
TENTH
4-6-8-2
KINSMANOR freaked in his first try at SHRP and wheels right back
Digging deeper: It might have been the muddy track, or it just might have been that he loves SHRP, or it might be that his trainer is simply on fire to start the meet. But the 4 comes off a dazzling win and wheels right back. It won’t be as easy this time but no reason to think he won’t run well again. Like a couple long shots to tie him to — No. 6 Rikeliner and No. 8 Special Tree, who always runs well at SHRP. Toss in the 1-2-3-9 in your exotics and I think you will have it pretty well covered.
Good luck today.
