Sam Houston Race Park selections for Saturday, Feb. 4 with additional analysis not available on the free tip sheet

We take a break from the Super Bowl pageantry to dive a little deeper into tonight’s card. I will not be at the track tonight (have an appearance at Capitol Bar on Main in Midtown from 4-6 — swing by if you are in the area) but will be pounding the later races online.

How to use the picks: These are the same picks you can get on the free tip sheet available  at shrp.com and on track. They are not meant to necessarily be in exact order, but more an opinion on likely winners.  I am assuming you have some knowledge or have listened to Acing Racing 2016.  We give a little more detail here than what you get on the tip sheet.

FIRST

7-4-6-5
CROSSBOW STAR has some early foot and might be able to last this time
Digging deeper: Unless one of the first time starters shows speed, the 7 will find herself alone on the lead, which is always a good place to be. But she is pretty heartless if someone presses her. I might key the 4 first and second with the 1-5-6-7-8 in the exactas and trifectas.

SECOND

4-1-7-5
TY’S AGENDA has three straight seconds but drop should do it
Digging deeper: Never a fan of 4-5 morning-line shots coming off three straight runner up finishes. But this guy drops and tonight should be the night. Not a big play race, but might hit the 4-1 exacta a few times as the 1 makes its second start vs. winners — one of my favorite angles — and should improve.
THIRD
5-8-3-10
POT LIQUOR will be very tough if the race stays on the grass
Digging deeper: Another short priced favorite, but might be able to find some back end exotic value with the 3, 4, 8 and 10. The 4 is not on our top four but could crash the party at a sweet price.
FOURTH
3-6-1-7
JOE T GARCIA’S should have these over a barrel tonight
Digging deeper: I feel like a school teacher with all this chalk, but hard to get around the 3 horse. Probably sitting this one out.
FIFTH
4-6-7-5
CHRISTINE SIXTEEN will need to improve but fits well here
Digging deeper: This one is pretty wide open. We have not been on top of the turf races so far, but like the 4 quite a bit and will use him in tris with the 1-3-5-6-7-10, probably keying him in the 1-2 slots.
SIXTH
3-6-1-8
SUNRISE CONTESSA should be right there at this distance
Digging deeper: Really like the 3 here, especially at the price. Made the lead going longer against tougher and got caught by a couple horses. Same move wins this. Playing across the board.
SEVENTH
8-9-7-6
SHES ALL RANGER is in terrific form and could surprise
Digging deeper: Past turf races have been OK for the 8, but the horse just dusted a nice field on the main track and is in terrific form right now. And we get 10-1. Will wheel up and down in the exactas with the field and play across the board.
EIGHTH
6-1-4-3
Fairly wide open race where none of the top four would be a surprise
Digging deeper: That is code for hit the “ALL” button in pick threes and fours. No strong opinion here and I think any horse except possibly Monster House can win this.
NINTH
6-10-8-5
BOSTON HUMOR has faced some tough runners on the turf in the past
Digging deeper: I think you can close out your late pick 3s and 4s with the 6 and 10. Both should offer value and if either wins you are getting paid. A cheap pick four play with 3 with 8 with ALL with 6-10 might get you home.
