On protecting legacies, Baylor at it again, Jesus in Florida and Sam Houston Race Park picks: The update for Feb. 7

Hakeem Olajuwon was the greatest Rocket, but it was not always smooth.

One of the things about sports is revisionist history. Often, people will go to no ends to protect the legacies of their heroes.

This is especially true of Michael Jordan. It has become accepted that he was the greatest player of all time, and any attempt to dispute that is met with contempt. That is how it is with myths.

The Rockets only won their two titles because Jordan was out of the league.

A half truth. People forget Jordan came back the year of the second title and was every bit as good as he ever was. The Bulls ran into a buzzsaw Orlando team. A year later they added Dennis Rodman and won three more titles.

And now this one from former Bulls GM Jerry Krause:

But I will say one thing for Michael Jordan … never came to me and asked for other players. He never came to me and asked me to draft a player. Never came to me and asked to trade for a player. Never once did that happen. Part of it was he thought he was so darn good he could win without ’em … He understood what we had to do as an organization.

Except he did not. Jordan famously wanted more North Carolina players, and was particularly upset when the Bulls were unable to trade for Walter Davis. He threatened to go straight to the owner.

“As soon as we get back, I’m calling {Jerry} Reinsdorf. Krause has messed everything up again. He can’t do anything,” Jordan said.

A couple days later, he said “If I were general manager, we’d be a better team.”

None of this is to denigrate Jordan. His accomplishments stand on their own. But people like Charles Barkley and now Krause going to such ridiculous ends to protect a legacy is insane. Obviously Krause was trying to make Jordan look good in comparison to Lebron James. They don’t bring up things like Jordan never winning a title without Phil Jackson, or the fact the team won 55 games the year Jordan was gone. He had great players around him, too, but that gets forgotten.

Rip James all you want, but there is no reason to make things up. Every great player wants more great players around him. Magic Johnson got a coach fired. Hakeem Olajuwon, the greatest Rocket ever, constantly complained about the roster around him. He once directly went after former Golden State players Joe Barry Carroll and Sleepy Floyd, saying the Rockets needed “Warriors who will fight.” The Rockets almost traded him at one point.

They all wanted to be better, because they were competitors. People should let legacies stand on their own and not make stuff up.

Oh, Baylor: New staff, same old issues. Baylor has already had to fire another coach because he was arrested in a prostitution sting. Just a bad look for a school that can’t get out of its own way. Obviously it is unrelated to the other issues, and trying to buy a blowie isn’t in the same stratosphere as covering up rape, but it is still a bad look.

Tuesday selections: Here are the picks for today’s races at Sam Houston Race Park:

THIRD: 5-6-2-1. PREVAILING looks like an absolute standout here
FOURTH: 4-6-3-1. SEEKING ALBERT was close in meet debut
FIFTH: 4-8-2-6. SMOOTHER is bred to love the grass and should improve
SIXTH: 8-7-3-5. OLDFASHION JUSTICE romped in meet debut and could repeat
SEVENTH: 4-10-3-8. DIVINE SOUL was in too deep in last; fits better here

NINTH: 8-7-9-6. I’M JOE NOT FLO needed last and should be close today
TENTH: 7-5-6-8. SHINING CITY will be tough if ready off the layoff
And finally, Florida: So bilking billions because Jesus wanted you to do so? Will  have to see how that defense works out in court.

HOTTIES OF THE DAY

Florida entertains us every day with weird stories. But we thought we would give them a chance at redemption by googling “hot Florida women.” This works.

  1. Considering how I feel about LeBron, it’s high praise when I say this is really good today Fred.
