To continue a little stint with beers brewed to the south of our great city, I picked up some Galveston Bay Beer Bull Shark. Not being from Houston or the Houston area originally, I am so glad that somebody brings these beers to the north side because it is such a trek just to go to the other side of Houston, much less all the way out to Dickinson! Given the rise in breweries out there, I’ll have to make my way south sometime though.
The canning label for Bull Shark is an off red with more of a cream red color taking up most of the middle portion. The name is centered with an upward tilt using a fancy font with a name that I don’t know. The Galveston Bay Beer lighthouse logo sits above the beer’s name. The coolest part of the can is probably the corniest too: the shark with bull horns. Overall, it’s a visually appealing can that has an easily distinguishable color.
Bull Shark has a nose that is so very sweet with caramel, malt, and some fruit notes. The aroma is like getting a fresh caramel apple or opening a caramel candy. It is as intoxicating to me as some IPAs out there, but in a completely different way obviously.
Even sweeter than the aroma is Bull Shark’s flavor! I am not sure how they don’t use sugar when brewing this wee heavy, but it is sweeter than others I’ve had in the past. The mouthfeel is light (as advertised) and it is oh so smooth! I get flavors of caramel, raisins, and citrus fruit swirling together all over my palate. Despite all of the sweetness, there is a terrific balance that makes it very drinkable and doesn’t let the flavors overpower you. It is delicious!
I’m giving Bull Shark four and a half stars because of its sweet flavor profile with masterful balance. If you are seeking qualities in a beer that can carry you through each of the two seasons here in Houston, Bull Shark can meet your needs! So what do you think? Do you like the tide of sweetness or was it more like a real shark bite to your tongue? Let us know! Beers to you, Houston.
