An old guy returns, keeping the kindness going, gambling play, drunk Canadiens, evil clowns and hot blue aliens: The update for Aug. 31

By FRED FAOUR

Filling in today because our good buddy Barry Laminack — like many of you — had issues with the storm. He did not get flooded (almost) but lost power and barely had cell service.

I was one of the lucky ones. We had over 30 inches of rain in our neighborhood but barely had street flooding. Never lost power. Hell, never lost satellite TV. It was pretty surreal watching everything happening — sometimes less than a mile away — and not seeing any impact in my neighborhood.

We will get back to a more traditional show today, but yesterday was about helping keep people informed, putting people together who needed/wanted help and trying to put some normalcy back in our lives.

A lot of people want to help right now, which is great. But people are going to need assistance for months to come. Let’s carry the momentum of kindness over as long as we can. And let’s not forget our friends in the Golden Triangle, who got slammed as badly as we did. They need aid as well.

I will be donating lots of time and money over the next few months, and encourage you to do the same if you were not affected. If you don’t have money to donate, time is every bit as valuable. In addition to my current donations, every dollar I make selling picks on pregame.com for the rest of this year (and probably beyond) will be donated directly to flood victims, including the money I already made on the Triple Crown picks. Let’s do what we can, and not let it end next week when things are getting back to normal. And let’s try to make the type of kindness and selflessness we have seen a daily thing, not just because of tragedy.

Reminder: Disco Biscuit tells you how you can help here.

Sports: Admittedly, I have not been as focused on sports for the last week because it was hard to concentrate on anything non-Harv related. I was glad to see the NFL allow the Texans to opt of a meaningless preseason game. I can’t get worked up over the Astros-Rangers issue. About the only sports take I have is I am shocked at how many people got stuck in the storm because of the Mayweather/McGregor fight. Crazy. Especially since we told you all week how it would play out. So did Jayoff288. We hope the profit you made was worth it.

Speaking of gambling...Fire up your Mybookie.lv account and put a few bucks on the Montreal-Ottawa over 51 tonight if you are looking for a little CFL action. Also will be on the over on Tulsa-Okie Light and under on Florida-Michigan. Good luck.

Carted away? I love the Maple Leafs. But this scout probably should have backed off the alcohol at some point. Get drunk, steal a golf cart, crash it, and flee at an amusement park.  The Triple Crown of WTF…

Clown comment, bro: Clowns are upset because of the remake of IT. Dude, you are clowns. People hate you. Another scary clown movie is not going to make it any worse. Find a new line of work. It has been a while since the Leprechaun movies. Maybe you can try that.

Quick Thrones comment: We will break it down on the show today, so no spoilers here, but did anyone find the finale ridiculously predictable? There were a lot of holes in the writing over the last few episodes and the finale was a huge example of that. Side note: If you watched Rick and Morty Sunday night, they had a little “in memorium” type comment at the end that said “Game of Thrones writing…2010-2016.” Hilarious. But the creator says it wasn’t him. Somebody is getting fired.

And finally…I am a sucker for animal videos. This is a dramatic rescue of a wildebeast from a crocodile by a hippo.  But before we start celebrating, look at the wildebeest’s mangled foot at the end. All he got was a reprieve. Some other animal was having breakfast off this guy less than an hour later.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“When we meet real tragedy in life, we can react in two ways – either by losing hope and falling into self-destructive habits, or by using the challenge to find our inner strength.

— Dalai Lama

(Although anytime I see a Dalai Lama quote all I can think of is Caddyshack. “On your deathbed, you will have total consciousness. So I got that going for me.”)

Unity from Rick and Morty. Hot blue aliens. How can you not like this?
