So yesterday sucked really bad. Just a heart breaking day on all fronts. First, in Las Vegas, a city people go to for the sole purpose of forgetting about their actual lives for a few days, a terrorist piece of scum with a cache of weapons went on a killing spree, targeting folks attending a country music festival. Like a coward he picked people off like fish in a barrel from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay. Over 50 people are dead. Over 500 are wounded. I’m getting kind of numb to these things, if we’re being honest. Baby Biscuit is 6 and they have active shooter drills at her school every year – she doesn’t know that’s what they are, but that’s what they are. That this is a reality is heartbreaking for me and I don’t like thinking about it. Now, everyone jumps online to offer their thoughts and prayers or their two cents on the gun debate. And understandably, the timing is a polarizing issue. But let me say this loud and clear for those in the back. If I’m ever gunned down in a mass casualty killing spree, you have my permission to immediately start talking about ways that it could have been prevented.”Thoughts and prayers” is a little hollow at a time like this, but I’m going to say it anyway. Because the people in Las Vegas are going to need those thoughts and prayers, even if it feels pointless to say.
Speaking of thoughts and prayers, they almost worked on Tom Petty. TMZ reported he’d died yesterday after being found in full cardiac arrest. Then, they said he wasn’t actually dead but instead clinging to life on life support. Journalism is officially dead. But alas, late last night he did pass away. Tom Petty is one of my favorites. As the child of two rock and rollers, I came out of the womb listening to Tom Petty. I generally don’t get sappy at the thought of celebrities dying but for some reason this hit me like a ton of bricks. RIP Tom Petty. And I leave you all with this video of him performing Free Fallin in the rain at ACL:
The Texans whipped up on the Titans on Sunday afternoon. You can read more about it here, here, and here! I love Deshaun Watson and I think we must protect him at all costs. I kind of wish they would have left him in to break the rookie TD record instead of just tie it but that’s just me. I’m excited to see him against a strong defense in the Chiefs next week.
Team Disco Balls fantasy update that everyone really cares about: Black Swan put up a hell of a fight. But I pulled out the victory behind dominant performances by T.Y. Hilton, Adam Vinateri, and a Jacksonville defense that couldn’t stop the Jets.
Post season baseball is here! The Astros kick off the post season against the Red Sox on Thursday. They won 101 games this year, but none of that will matter without a deep playoff run. Read Chris’ wrap up of the regular season here.
Finally, in case you missed it, will we be getting some cooler weather soon?
