The NFL Ratings Slide, Monica Lewinsky’s #MeToo & more: The Oct. 20 Update

By Lamont Mann  @sportsmediaLM

The NFL ratings are slipping.  I didn’t want to believe it at first, because I seriously can’t fathom a football fan giving up watching the NFL. However, but more and more recent reports confirm that ratings have in fact taken a downturn. I think it has to do with the whole “players kneeling during the National Anthem” situation.

Last year, the NFL experienced a similar ratings drop.  Many attributed it to Colin Kaepernick’s initial refusal to stand.  Upon further investigation, another variable was considered: the US Presidential Election. The NFL went up against one of the most divisive elections that I can remember. The prevailing thought was that fans were suffering from political fatigue, but I believe people were tuning out the NFL to spend more time concerning themselves with the election shit-show.

While National Anthem kneeling and Trump are still hovering over this billion dollar industry, I’ve found that Trump’s comments towards the NFL actually aren’t the main cause.

I listen to tons of political radio and podcast – and here’s what I have discovered: most GOP and Conservative Talk Show Hosts are outwardly proclaiming to their audience that they simply do not care for NFL anymore, and how they are no longer watching.  Essentially, they set it up these statements as if they are a die-hard fan, but after the kneeling fiasco, they are no longer interested.

Political audiences are impressionable, and if Mark Levin, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity say they are no longer interested, you better believe that their fans will follow.

Unfortunately, in addition to these conservative talk shows, the NFL is definitely still also facing Kaepernick supporters who are boycotting the NFL – I just can’t see how the NFL comes out of this situation clean with both sides essentially turning off their televisions.

Politics Update

Monica Lewinsky is the latest to hop on the #MeToo hashtag.  #MeToo is the hashtag created for people who have been sexually assaulted. Naturally, by Monica “speaking out,” the world instantly turns and looks right at Bill Clinton – but hell, I’m looking at you, Hillary.

Sports Update

It was all a dream, Astros.

Game four between Astros and Yankees, I was on cloud nine as Carlos Correa drove Jose Altuve home in the 7th inning to take a 4-0 lead.  The only thing I could think of as Altuve slid in, is that feeling I get when my woman says she’s off her cycle. However, it was short lived. Astros lost, 6-4.
